Did Covid-19 cause an increased in temporary staffing?

The job market has been going through a considerable change since Covid-19 came on the scene. Companies have to say goodbye to professionals or hire fewer permanent employees. After more than half a year of ‘Corona’, Derks & Derks sees a significant increase in the number of applications for temporary professionals in its daily practice. This seems to contradict each other but is easily explained.

 

Job Marketing Statistics

Compared to the previous quarter, the CBS statistics show that we have 173,000 fewer ‘workers’ in the Netherlands and that they counted in almost 300,000 fewer vacancies in the same period. The government measures, of course, explain this decline in all kinds of sectors (such as catering and cabaret) and the ‘counting knots’ of all other companies. The uncertainty about what the world will look like in six months is for many companies pushing expansion plans into the future. Plans go into the fridge, and people feel hesitation in appointing new permanent employees.

 

Urgencies For Life Sciences Companies

Of course, this doesn’t work everywhere. When (bio) pharmaceutical production runs out of QP, they need to act quickly. When the validation of a business unit gets in trouble, it affects the operating result too hard, and something has to be done immediately. The market introduction of a new drug immediately requires robust Market Access. If the negotiations with the health insurer have to be completed before January 2021, that is also a matter of ‘solve NOW’. There is also often urgency in quality (a close inspection or points for improvement that require urgent attention) and production (the new factory must be delivered following deadlines). And then employees cannot wait for Covid-19 infected or in-home quarantine.
